Today In Hip Hop: June 27th Freestyle

Today marks the name of the famous freestyle off oDJ Screw’s 1996 tape June 27th. DJ Screw  recorded the freestyle in honor of his friend D-Mo’s birthday. This track has gone down in history as one of the best Houston hip-hop recordings ever. This track gives people the insight of the  Southern style of rapping.

Screw is more than music it is a life style. Muddy  sprites, candy cars, chopped up and slowed music, and so much more. For June 27th to still be relevant 18 years later is a huge deal for the late great DJ Screw. With artist like Drake and many more sampling the record will forever keep Screw alive.


The instrumental sampled and chopped up by DJ Screw is that of Kris Kross' Da Streets Ain’t Right which samples Biggie’s Warning. Stream the full June 27th freestyle below.

The Notorious B.I.G. should have celebrated his 42nd birthday today. Biggie was born in Brooklyn. He released his debut Album Ready To Die in 1994 putting East Coast Hip Hop on the scene. Today In Hop Hop: Kanye West released The College Dropout

Def Jam celebrates Kanye West  releasing his classic debut album, The College Dropout, ten years ago .College Dropout was not like any album in its time period, with hits like All Falls Down, Through the Wire, Jesus Walks, Slow Jamz and Workout Plan . To say this was Kanye's freshman album he had  features from Jay Z, Common, and Jaimie Foxx.  College Dropout peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard 200.

Today In Hip Hop Salt "N" Pepa and En Vogue combined to release the single "Whatta' Man". The single is from the album Very Necessary. Whatta Man peaked on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart at number 3.The Matthew Rolston  directed video won MTV Video Music Awards for Best Dance Video, Best R&B Video, and Best Choreography.  Watch the video below. Today in Hip Hop : RIP Pimp C

Six years ago on this day we lost an OG in the rap game, Chad Butler better known as Pimp C. Pimp C was a rapper and producer but he was most known for being the other half of the popular group Underground Kingz (UGK) with Bun B.

The songs Pimp C were most remember for were I'sa  Playa, Pourin Up, and Murder. Not only was Pimp C known for his rap music but his pimpin vernacular. The lyrics from Murder start off like ,
