One of my favorite Spike Lee films is being brought back to life by Showtime. She's Gotta Have It will be a full series on Showtime. If you remember, She's Gotta Have It was about Nola Darling juggling her three lovers while living in New York City.
A pilot for the show is currently in the works, and the network will decide if it will make it to TV.
Lee is on board as the show's director and writer — and he is expected to take a contemporary look at the film's plot, cast and characters.
The movie, which is set in Brooklyn, explores the the story of one sexually liberated black female and the three suitors who hope to win her over. Embedded among the film's scenes are special commentary and insight on a number of perspectives on race, gender, gentrification and sexuality.
Ultimately, She's Gotta Make It arguably became one of Lee's biggest hits, grossing over $7 million at the box office.
The film had heavy influence in the 1980s American Independent film movement, and it helped pave the way for other black films and filmmakers.
Check out the trailer for the 1986 film below. What are your thoughts?
