The Goverment Shutdown: A few questions that need answers


With so many unanswered questions, false reports and rumors about the Government Shutdown in these internet streets, In The Cut wants to shed some light on the situation.

  • What is a “Government Shutdown”?
The definition is as followed



A government shutdown occurs when a government discontinues providing services that are not considered "essential." Typically, services that continue in spite of a shutdown include police, fire fighting, utilities and corrections.
  • What caused this Government shutdown?
The Republicans and Democrats are at odds about Obamacare (Affordable Care Act) A spending bill has been passed that claims the Government can’t afford Obamacare. Democratic Senate and Obama completely disagree.
  • When would shutdown end?
The shutdown will end once a compromise is met between the two parties.
  • How would shutdown impact the economy?
A short shutdown of a few days would shave millions off economic growth, if a two-week partial government shutdown would shave 0.3 to 0.4 of a percentage point from economic growth. A longer downtime would result in increasingly larger and escalating problems for the economy.  The last shutdown cost America an estimated $1.4 billion.
  • When was the last Government shutdown?
17-years-ago when Bill Clinton was President. The government was shutdown for three weeks 1995-96, the American economy felt a jolt but recovered quickly.
  • Would unemployment benefits stop?
No unemployment payment will not stop.
  • Does shutdown affect child support?
Despite the ratchet conspiracy theorist, tweets and memes floating around on the internet, The shutdown does not affect child support.
  • Will Mail service stop?
 U.S. Postal Service is an independent business, so mail will be delivered as normal.
